One-half of Maryland's land area is on the Atlantic coast plain, the south is sandy, and the north is fertile. The state's transatlantic Chesapeake Bay has a coastline of 3,200 miles. Chesapeake Bay is a wide and long valley, extending from south to north into the inland, dividing Maryland into two parts. Chesapeake Bay is 320 kilometers long from north to south, 6-60 kilometers wide from east to west, and 105 meters deepest. The West Bank has the James River and the Potomac River. In the north is the Bay Head, which is infused with the Susquehanna River. There is a 30-kilometer canal that passes directly through the northern part of Delaware to the lower reaches of the Delaware River. General information
